My name is Joshua Adams, and I’m a Clinical Psychologist. I love to help people find and live out lives of purpose.

My Journey

My journey towards becoming a Psychologist has been an interesting one. I graduated from high school as class valedictorian and went straight into a science degree focused on math. I’ve always been a logical thinker, and I enjoyed the experience of ‘mastery’ that came from solving difficult problems. After this, I spent several years teaching math; however, I became unsatisfied with this career choice as I progressively became thirstier to get ‘deeper’ with people in understanding their lives and helping them with personal issues.

Spirituality and Meaning

I pursued a degree in religious studies because of a deep interest in religion and spirituality and how these connect to quality of life and life purpose. From here, I decided that I would try helping people through working with the homeless.

After working with homeless people at the Calgary Drop-In Centre for a few years, I realized that I did not have enough skills to help them. I grew in my compassion and desire to help the poor and disadvantaged, but I knew that I just didn’t have the tools and the resources to help them in more in-depth ways. I wanted to help them make changes, so I realized that I needed to study more about how to help people change.

Psychology Training

I enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Counselling. I finished this degree and the subsequent steps to become a Registered Psychologist, at the same time as I worked in various capacities with the homeless population: Supervisor, Building Supervisor, Case Manager, Counsellor, and Mental Health Clinician. In this time, I became the first ever Registered Psychologist at the Calgary Drop-In Centre – Canada’s largest homeless shelter.

I also completed a practicum at Calgary Counselling Centre and did some subsequent contract therapy through them afterwards. 6 years ago, I decided to branch out and start my own private practice – Authentic Psychology.

My personality

I’m calm and rational, empathic, sincere, open-minded, and a good listener. I truly enjoy getting to know people, finding their strengths and genuine values, and helping them overcome barriers to becoming authentic and intentional in living out their own unique purpose.

Open-Minded

I’m born and raised Canadian, yet I’m fascinated by other cultures and ways of being in relationships with others—especially those societies which amplify community and interconnectedness. I have a complex spiritual and scientific worldview which I love to discuss and debate; however, I don’t impose my belief system on others, especially in a therapy context. Rather, I love to listen to and empathize with others’ views on any topic that is important to them. I do this without judgment.

My interests

I am a father to three wonderful children, and I am very social–after a long day of counselling, I often find myself hungry for even more interpersonal connections! I also enjoy reading non-fiction (mostly psychology) books, podcasts and articles, discussing and debating interesting ideas, exercising and rollerblading, playing card games and board games, and getting out to festivals, community gatherings and parties, and various other fun activities. My future passion that I am working towards building is community co-housing where groups of adults and children can do life together within the context of the sharing economy.

Person-centred Therapy

Person-centred Therapy is not so much a series of activities and interventions as it is a way of being with people and a way of perceiving their struggles and their strengths. As a central perspective, Person-centred therapists view all people as having the potential to make positive changes and to live out a life of authenticity and genuine meaning. Person-centred therapists act as catalysts for change by being a safe, accepting, and empathic listener; they can help you identify barriers and effectively make progress in your life while feeling understood.

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an active and action-oriented approach which helps clients learn skills to manage and change problematic thinking (cognition), behaviour, and—as a result— emotions. CBT therapists do this through a variety of techniques and strategies.

Existential Therapy

Existential Therapy is more of a philosophical approach to doing therapy than it is a set of techniques. It assumes that people are free and therefore responsible for their choices. Its focus is on pursuing authentically chosen values to live out a life of purpose.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is about having effective conversations. These conversations are collaborative, focusing on and strengthening the client’s own motivation and commitment for change. (Miller & Rollnick, Motivational Interviewing, 3rd Edition).

Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy

Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a brief form of therapy which is collaborative and focuses on solutions rather than problems.

Individual Counselling

Psychotherapy for well-being and functioning focuses on helping individuals enhance their mental health and daily life by using tailored interventions. The goal is to empower individuals to develop healthier habits, cope and function effectively with challenges, and achieve a greater sense of overall well-being.

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy using the Gottman approach is a structured method that helps partners strengthen their relationship through research-based techniques. It focuses on enhancing communication, resolving conflicts, and fostering emotional connection by identifying and building on positive interactions. By understanding each other’s needs and behaviours, couples can create a more supportive and loving partnership.

Psychological assessments for cognitive and mental health involve various tools, tests, and interview questions that help professionals understand an individual's thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. These assessments can identify mental health conditions, gauge cognitive abilities, and provide insights into a person's strengths and challenges. Psychological Consult

A psychological consult is a meeting where an individual talks with a mental health professional about their thoughts, feelings, and any challenges they’re facing. The therapist listens, provides guidance, and helps create a plan for support and improvement in mental well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to come in to the office for an appointment, or can I do virtual or phone counselling?

You can book either an in person or virtual session, provided that you are physically in Alberta at the time of the session.

Our office is in the neighbourhood of Inglewood in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. There is free parking in front.

Cost: What is the cost of services?

Individual and couples counselling is $200 per hour, or $300 per 90-minute session. Payment can be made before or at the session via cash or e-transfer, and a receipt can be issued after the session.

Assessment services are $220 per hour for all services which includes interviewing, testing, and assessment write-up. An estimate can be provided. These assessments may vary in length, depth and complexity, diagnostic testing, and summaries/ recommendations desired. A general quote can be given before starting with these assessments.

Benefits: I have benefits through my work. Do your services apply and can I use my benefits?

Very likely. Every benefit company and package is different, but most offer “Psychological services” and thus should be covered. Please make sure you know the limits that your benefit company may have on these services before you get started.

Do you do Direct Billing to Benefits companies?

Yes; however, some companies allow Psychologists to direct bill and others don’t. Feel free to ask about your specific company, and/ or bring in your billing information to the first session and we can see if they offer direct billing. If not, a receipt can be issued after payment that should work.

What if I can’t afford these services?

A sliding scale, down to $150 per hour, can be discussed and agreed upon based on your individual financial needs or situation.
